Summer camp carnival

Dear parents,

Friday July 29th will be carnival day at camp. All campers will participate in relays, carnival games, water games etc. In the afternoon, the different groups will show their peers some of what they have learned or otherwise done during camp. Half-day campers are welcome to stay all day. Due to space limitations we unfortunately cannot invite parents to the show.

Please make sure your campers bring their swim suit, a towel, shoes that can get wet and sun protection for this day!

ESL Field Trip to See Washington Mystics!

Last Wednesday, all three ESL classes traveled to the Verizon Center to see the Washington Mystics (D.C.’s WNBA women’s basketball team) take on the Atlanta Dream.  Unfortunately, our team didn’t win but we had a blast at the game–check it out!

ESL Intermediate week 4

Can you believe it—we have reached our final week of camp! The past few weeks have been packed with fun and learning, but this week will mark the end of our time together in ESL Intermediate. For those of you who are new to our class this week, welcome! My name is Jessica and I am thrilled to have you join our class. I am a recent graduate from James Madison University with my Masters in Elementary Education, and this is my second summer teaching ESL here at Washington International. In the ESL program, campers will build proficiency with the English language in a fun, exciting environment, explore the Washington, D.C. area, and make lasting friendships. Over the past three weeks, campers have explored the themes of “Washington, D.C.,” “USA,” and “Sports” through reading, listening, and writing exercises, games and projects. They have enjoyed field trips to the pool, Georgetown, Mount Vernon and a Washington Mystics basketball game, and sparked new friendships with classmates from across the globe–and the fun continues…

The theme this week is my personal favorite and one the campers have been anxiously waiting for—popular culture. All listening, writing, reading, and speaking activities will be tied to this theme as we practice conjugating verbs, expanding vocabulary, and gaining confidence speaking and writing in English. Campers will study how American films, music, and trends change over time, and share about the pop culture in their own native countries. We will build vocabulary pertaining to celebrities, media, and fads, create iMovies depicting the decades in 20th century American pop culture, view films and listen to music as we discuss genres, all while practicing written and oral communication skills. In particular, we will focus on subject-verb agreement and continue to practice conjugating verbs into past, present, and future tense and utilizing pronouns. To top it off, on Friday we will go to Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum to see the glamorous stars in person and stop for a treat!

Please do not hesitate to stop by any time to chat about campers’ progress or share any concerns with me! All of us at WIS want this to be a great learning experience and a summer to remember for ALL campers, so let me know what I can do to help!

- Jessica

Please note:

(!) All ESL classes will go to the pool this Wednesday, weather permitting. Please bring a swimsuit, towel, and (if you’d like) goggles.

(!) All ESL classes will go to Madame Tussauds this Friday during regular camp hours (for no additional charge). Campers may choose to bring a camera, water bottle, and/or money for the gift shop. We will return to school in time for lunch, and a special treat will be provided by WIS.

Week 3, ESL Intermediate

The summer is flying by and we are already in our third week in Intermediate ESL! Over the past two weeks, campers have explored the themes of “Washington, D.C.” as well as “USA” through games and projects.  They have enjoyed field trips to the pool, Georgetown, and Mount Vernon and sparked new friendships with classmates from across the globe–and the fun will continue this week!

The theme this week is one many campers have been anxiously waiting for–sports!  All listening, writing, reading, and speaking activities will be tied to this theme as we practice conjugating verbs, expanding vocabulary, and gaining confidence speaking and writing in English.  Campers will not only study American sports but also have the opportunity to share sports and games from their native countries with our class as we learn about one another.  We will build vocabulary pertaining to sporting events, athletes, and equipment, create silly sports videos, make our own baseball cards, and even hit the field to try out a few of our favorites!  To top it off, on Wednesday we will go to the Verizon Center to cheer on the Washington Mystics in a live basketball game!

Please do not hesitate to stop by anytime to chat about campers’ progress or share any concerns with me!  All of us at WIS want this to be a great learning experience and a summer to remember for ALL campers, so let me know what I can do to help!

International Food Day!

Yesterday the ESL Intermediate class enjoyed a lunch filled with foods from across the globe!  Several students were able to bring a dish representing their native countries, and our class enjoyed sampling them all as we learned about one another’s cultures!  We tried…

- Pasta and slame from Italy

- Oblea and arequipe from Colombia

- Sikma from Turkey

- Arepas from Venezuela

- Pierogies from Poland

- Pao de queizo from Brazil

- Hot dogs and mac n’ cheese from America

ESL Famous American Voicethread

As a part of this week’s “USA” theme, the ESL Intermediate class has been learning about famous Americans.  Today the campers put their oral communication skills into action as they created a Voicethread video depicting a few of their famous Americans from Walt Disney to Barack Obama to George Washington.  Check it out at http://voicethread.com/share/2148676/ and feel free to leave a comment letting us know what you think!

Reminder: ESL International Food Day Tomorrow!

Dear families,

The ESL Intermediate class is looking forward to having an International Food Day this Thursday!  Since the campers in our class are from across the globe, we would love the opportunity to experience one another’s cultures through taste.  If possible please bring a small dish to share that your camper feels represents his/her native country.  We have access to a refrigerator and microwave if needed.  If you are unable to bring something, that is no problem.  Ideally we would like to sample a variety of cuisines, including some American dishes I will bring, to learn about our classmates and global cultures. Thanks for your help!

Sincerely,

Jessica
