Summer camp carnival

Dear parents,

Friday July 29th will be carnival day at camp. All campers will participate in relays, carnival games, water games etc. In the afternoon, the different groups will show their peers some of what they have learned or otherwise done during camp. Half-day campers are welcome to stay all day. Due to space limitations we unfortunately cannot invite parents to the show.

Please make sure your campers bring their swim suit, a towel, shoes that can get wet and sun protection for this day!

ESL Field Trip to See Washington Mystics!

Last Wednesday, all three ESL classes traveled to the Verizon Center to see the Washington Mystics (D.C.’s WNBA women’s basketball team) take on the Atlanta Dream.  Unfortunately, our team didn’t win but we had a blast at the game–check it out!

ESOL week 4, July 25-29

Dear Parents,

My name is Sarah Lasseron and I am be the beginner level ESOL teacher. I am a recent graduate from Bard College as a German Studies major. I am also a native French speaker. I was once an ESL student myself. I lived in France for 10 years and never took an English class, although I did speak the language since my mother is American.

I attended and am also a graduate of the Washington International School. My first year at WIS I was enrolled in both English and ESL. I remember my experience as fun, entertaining and educational. It is my hope to provide the same experience for your children.

For the fourth and final week of camp we will be exploring the theme of pop culture. Through games, art, exercises and other activities we will be learning all about American pop culture. Our objective for this week will be to learn new vocabulary surrounding music and movies, including reviewing vocabulary of previous weeks (feelings, food and sports). We will review verbs to be, to have, to do, to run, to walk and to go and learn new ones, such as to play, to act, to sing etc. We will also be learning more about possessive pronouns and quantifiers (much, many, a lot etc.)

This week we will be making our own musical instruments and creating our own song, which we will videotape. We will also write a small skit, which students will have to perform and will be videotaped.

I look forward to another fun week,

Sarah

For the third week of camp we will be exploring the theme of Sports. Through games, art, exercises and other activities we will be learning all about sports and those specific to the United States. Our objective for this week will be to learn new vocabulary surrounding sports and review the vocabulary of the previous weeks (feelings and food). We will review auxiliary verbs to be, to have and to do and learn new ones, more specifically ones of action and movement (run, walk, sprint etc.)

This week students will get to test their newly learned material outside of the classroom. I will create a relay obstacle course, which the class (divided into 2 teams) will go through by accomplishing different tasks that have to do with the vocabulary, verbs and grammar we will learn in class. Students will also be asked to create posters about all different kinds of sport and will be expected to identify the vocabulary, verbs of action and draw the field, which the sport is played on. Students will also have to do a presentation about their favorite sport in front of the class.

I look forward to another fun week,

Sarah

(!) Reminder:

On Thursday we will be going on our field trip to the Mystics Day Camp. The Mystics are the women’s basketball team of Washington DC.
